Jennifer Cumming, PT, MSPT, CLT, WCS, completed her master’s degree in physical therapy in 2001 at Des Moines University, a well-regarded osteopathic-based physical therapy program. There she developed excellent orthopedic and manual skills, including muscle energy technique and myofascial release.
Jennifer began taking pelvic floor courses and treating pelvic floor diagnoses in 2004 while working at the Rehabilitation Institute of Chicago. While at RIC, she was nominated for the Magnuson Award for outstanding leadership in 2007. She developed the pelvic floor program at Norwegian American Hospital, a community hospital in Chicago. This program incorporated the use of acupuncture, aroma therapy, and massage therapies.
After moving to Kansas City, Jennifer joined the oncology and pelvic floor rehab teams at the University of Kansas Hospital. There, she helped to grow the pelvic floor and oncology rehab programs. She received a Certificate of Appreciation from the Hospital in 2012 for providing cost-effective treatment and treatment options for patients receiving lymphedema care. Jennifer recently opened Foundational Concepts, Specialty Physical Therapy in 2013 to focus exclusively on pelvic floor physical therapy.
Jennifer completed the Herman and Wallace pelvic floor series and is eligible to sit for the Pelvic Floor Certified Therapist examination when it becomes available. She completed the Certified Lymphedema Therapist certification in 2011 through the Klose School. Jennifer has lectured for the Midwest Student Conclave sponsored by the KPTA, Rockhurst University physical therapy program, the University of Kansas Cancer Center BeWell series, and various community groups. She is a Credentialed Clinical Instructor and enjoys teaching physical therapy students interested in pelvic floor and women’s health rehab in the clinical setting.
Jennifer is active in the APTA professional organization and is a member of the Women’s Health and Private Practice sections. Jennifer is a past member of the Chicagoland Pelvic Floor Research Consortium and is actively involved in the Kansas City Pelvic Floor and Women’s Health Group and the National Pelvic Floor Distance Journal Club. She is board certified in women’s health specialty physical therapy and holds a certification in lymphedema therapy. She also has specialty training in assessment and treatment of the temporomandibular joint (TMJ dysfunction) and the integrative systems model.
